B.S., Bachelor, Education

The Adelia C. Minor Math Education Scholarship was created in 2017 by Dorothy C. Minor in memory of her aunt, Adelia Clare Minor, who taught at Radford Union High School Detroit, Michigan.

My aunt, Adelia Clare Minor, was born in the early years of the twentieth century. Her father was a Universalist minister and her family lived in Ohio, Illinois and Ontario, Canada. Careers for women were very limited, she attended a normal college in Illinois and graduated as a high school Latin teacher. Later, she studied at George Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri and received a Master’s degree in Mathematics. As a result of the Great Depression, Adelia Minor was unemployed in her field and took a job with the Works Progress Administration teaching English as a second language to immigrants. She wrote a humorous newspaper about her family and life to keep her spirits up.  Finally, she found a position teaching in Garden City, Michigan.

There was no student loans or benefits during her college years. My aunt funded her college education by working in a box factory and then saved part of her salary for her graduate school degree. She was a very frugal lady. Aunt Adelia’s savings funded a down pavement on a family farm when her father retired from the pulpit. Her savings also bought a house in Farmington, Michigan, when her parents were too old to manage the farm. They lived with her until their deaths while she worked full time teaching at the Radford Union High School near Detroit.

When Adelia C. Minor retired at the age of 65, she spent a year taking recreational courses at her local community college. During this time, she decided to become a Braille transcriber and took the course offered by the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, Library of Congress. She was certified and became a member of the Narden Park Braille Group. Adelia Minor transcribed textbooks into Braille for students in Michigan. She became a textbook coordinator and then took the Braille Proofreading Course. She passed the exam for this rigorous course and served as a volunteer proofreader for the Narden Park Braille Group. At that time, computer software was not available for this work. She carried all of the Braille rules and codes in her head.

Truly, the more I learned about Aunt Adelia, the more I was amazed by her life and her accomplishments. Adelia Clare Minor died at the age of 93 having lived her life independently and according to the dictates of her own heart. - Dorothy Clare Minor, June 26, 2017
